Black Mayors Respond to President Trump’s Comments in Lead Up to Presidential Forum on Criminal Justice

AAMA called on the President to retract his comments on “lynching.”

(WASHINGTON, DC) Mayor Hardie Davis (Augusta, GA), President of the African American Mayors Association, released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s recent remarks, calling the congressional impeachment process a “lynching” just days before the 20/20 Bipartisan Justice Center Second Step Presidential Justice Forum:

“We look forward to being part of the bipartisan criminal justice forum at Benedict College in South Carolina this weekend. This important event will bring together a diverse group of leaders who care deeply about criminal justice reform. Together we will bring this important conversation to the national stage and seek bipartisan consensus on reforms that will support people and communities around the country. The First Step Act was indeed a ‘first step’ toward much needed criminal justice reform and we welcome its attention to sentencing and better integrating returning citizens into our communities. We know there is a long way to go and we welcome those who join us in their commitment to this issue. It is in this spirit that we welcomed the participation of President Trump at the forum along with other presidential candidates. We are offended by the president’s comments on “lynching” and the distortion of the historic horrors of racial violence in this country. We urge the President to retract his comments.”
